PIP Your Boss

About

Who writes this and why

I am Marguerite Okonjo. I spent fourteen years in human resources, most of it in mid-sized companies, the last five running the function. I sat on the other side of a lot of performance plans.

I started writing this because the advice available to the person receiving one is almost all terrible. It is either legal content marketing trying to sell a consultation, or forum threads telling you to start recording meetings on your phone. Neither is much use on a Tuesday afternoon when you have been handed two pages and feel sick.

What this is not

It is not legal advice. I am not a lawyer, employment law differs everywhere, and if you think something unlawful is happening you should talk to somebody qualified in your country.

It is not anti-manager. Most managers handling a performance conversation are underprepared and anxious. A lot of what is here works precisely because it makes their job easier too.

It is not a business. Nothing is sold here, there is no newsletter, and there are no affiliate links.

Corrections

If something here is wrong, or wrong for your country, tell me and I will fix it and say that I did.
